Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening initiative will celebrate its 12th year on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 with sites all over the world going green on St. Patrick’s Day.
The first Global Greening initiative took place on March 17, 2010 with the iconic Sydney Opera House being illuminated green. Since then sites all over the world have joined in the initiative and this year there are a record number of locations around the world going green. On St. Patrick’s Day, there will be almost 700 sites in 66 countries that will take part in the Global Greening initiative with over 300 locations being illuminated green for the first time in 2021.
Everyone knows that the island of Ireland is the best place in the world to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. However, as overseas visitors can’t travel there, for now, this St Patrick’s Day Tourism Ireland will bring a taste of Ireland right into the homes of people everywhere around the world.
‘St Patrick’s Day at Home with Tourism Ireland’ will be a 90-minute broadcast on the evening of 17 March – from three of our best-known and much-loved pubs. Hosted by TV presenter Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh, the event will be live-streamed on social media from Johnnie Fox’s pub in the Dublin Mountains, as well as from Dick Mack’s in Dingle and the Duke of York in Belfast.
Tourism Ireland has created a St. Patrick’s Day tradition with the Global Greening Initiative where buildings, landmarks, and historical sites will be illuminated green to celebrate Ireland’s National Day. This year the tradition continues with more sites around the world being illuminated green than ever before and we cannot wait to see them all.
Tourism Ireland is excited to get the Irish diaspora involved by introducing the Green Candle Initiative. There is a tradition in Ireland of lighting a candle in a window, as a way of guiding strangers in the night.
