Irish America’s 1985 Premier Issue Is Now Online!

Celebrating 30 years – you can now view the premier issue of Irish America from October 1985.

August 28, 2015

This October marks the 30th anniversary of Irish America’s premier issue, featuring the first Irish America Top 100, exclusive photographs of Samuel Beckett, an interview with Boston’s Irish mayor Ray Flynn, commentary on the now-world renowned MacBride Principles, and so much more ephemeral news that you’ll probably realize that you’ve forgotten how much you didn’t remember.

To celebrate our third decade, Irish America has put the premier issue online for new and old readers to look back on – a time capsule of how important the Irish American community was at the time, and an indication of just how much has changed for the community and for Ireland.

Like this bit of news about only the third airline to offer direct flights to Ireland:

"Pan Am's Return Flight"

“Pan Am’s Return Flight”

Pan Am folded 6 years after the article appeared, and Northwest (formerly Northwest Orient) has long ceased their Shannon operations, but has been replaced by the luxury likes of Delta, American, and Ethiopian Airlines. Only Aer Lingus remains the constant.

Over the course of the remaining year, Irish America will be posting the rest of our archives online and featuring interviews and articles from those archives each week.

You can check out the premier issue here. And stay tuned for more updates from the archive! ♦
