Springtime Brings Irish Theatre to Milwaukee

Springtime Theater in Milwaukee will feature a variety of Irish works throughout March and April in various theaters around the city.

The University of Wisconsin, Madison theater program, will present Brian Friel’s Philadelphia Here I Come in March, with a special St. Patrick’s night performance scheduled. The play, which won a Tony Award on Broadway in 1966, is Friel’s first and most popular work.

The university’s ongoing partnership with Dublin’s Access Art Center brings another award-winning Irish play to Milwaukee in late April/early May; From These Green Heights is a portrayal of life in North Dublin’s Ballymun complex written by Dermot Bolger.

The Milwaukee Rep Theater will present Friel’s A Month in the Country, directed by Ben Barnes in his first directorial outing since leaving his post at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre in December.

Aside from the dramatic works, Springtime Theater also brings Dan O’Brien’s hilarious An Irish Play to Milwaukee audiences. The comedy is presented in the Pub at the Irish Cultural Heritage Center and concerns a Cork-based drama group’s endeavors to put on a play for their pub theater.
