James Joyce with Gusto

Josephine Hogan and Vincent O'Neill perform at the James Joyce with Gusto Celebration

April / May 2006

The University of Buffalo presented “James Joyce with Gusto” in celebration of the writer’s birthday on February 3.

Selections of Joyce’s writings were put on exhibition at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery for the day’s events, which included lectures by Joyce scholars Margot Norris, Professor of English, University of California, Irvine and President, International James Joyce Foundation; and Luca Crispi, James Joyce Fellow, National Library of Ireland.

The program included music provided by Kindred, and performances by Buffalo’s Irish Classical Theatre Company stars Vincent O’Neill and Josephine Hogan.

The university boasts “the greatest James Joyce Collection in the world,” and is a magnet for international scholars, with an estimated value exceeding 400 million dollars.

The collection and the documentary film about it, “Following James Joyce… Dublin to Buffalo,” are presently at the heart of the largest Joyce exhibition ever undertaken, at the National Library of Ireland in Dublin.

The evening concluded with a showing of the documentary, directed by Patrick Martin and Stacey Herbert, and a reception at the Garden Restaurant at the Albright-Knox with Gerry Dixon and Laurence Shine. ♦
