The Irish Immigration Center’s (IIC) 11th annual Solas Awards Dinner was held at the Westin Hotel in Boston on October 27.

Teresa Heinz, John McGrail, founder of the Mayo Group, and Janice Loux, the first female president of UNITE HERE Local 26, the Boston Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union, were the three recipients of the IIC’s Solas Awards in accordance with this year’s theme, “The Immigrant Story — The American Story.”

During her acceptance speech Heinz made reference to being schooled by wonderful Irish nuns in her youth and commented that from them, she “learned [to have] a sense of humor.”

Since its inception 16 years ago, the IIC has provided assistance to immigrants from around the world with its numerous employment, housing and immigration services as well as offering New Englanders Irish cultural events throughout the year.
