Cannel Thirteen/WNET’s Stage on Screen is offering a two-part special on Samuel Beckett, the first of which, Beckett on Film, will air at 10:00p.m. on September 15. The second, Waiting for Godot, starring Barry McGovern and Johnny Murphy, will air on January 1, 2003.

Beckett on film will feature seven short Beckett plays directed and starring many notables of stage and screen including David Mamet, Harold Pinter, Anthony Minghella, Kristen Scott-Thomas, Alan Rickman and John Gielgud, in what turned out to be his final screen performance.

The plays are selected from the Irish-based Beckett on Film project, which features all 19 of Beckett’s plays. Documentary highlights, interspersed between the plays and presented by Jeremy Irons, provide background and commentary to make what are sometimes perceived as difficult plays more accessible. ♦
