Wal-Mart has been named the biggest corporation in America in the annual Fortune 500 list of mighty corporations. As of January 31, Wal-Mart operated 2,713 Wal-Mart and Supercenter stores, 500 Sam’s clubs and 31 Neighborhood Markets in the United States. It is the first service company to rise up to the top of the Fortune 500 – up till now, the list has always been headed by industrial companies. Tom Coughlin is President and cEO of Wal-Mart Stores Division, the largest retailer in the world. He has been with the company since 1978 when there were only 200 stores. Coughlin was Irish America’s Keynote Speaker at the annual Business 100 awards held last November and says that his success comes from being attuned to his workers. ♦
