Writer and former firefighter Dennis Smith has spent a lot of time in the company of firefighters since September 11th. He is the founding editor of Firehouse magazine and best-selling author of Report from Engine Co. 82 and other books. He is a licensed financial advisor (having completed federal series 7, series 63 and series 65 exams) and writes a financial advice column for firefighters in Firehouse. He turned his column over to a colleague while concentrating on his book Report from Ground Zero, published in March 2002. In his December 2001 column, he described the motivation behind the book and recounted what he has been doing since the attacks. “Since September 11th, I have been working with the New York City firefighters every day. I do whatever I can at the site of the World Trade Center, and then I spend time raising money for the fire and police families. I have been asked to write a book about it from the firefighters’ point of view, what they have been through, what they have suffered. It is a terrible time. The worst time.” ♦
